How to Know If Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

There are quite a few indicators that can teach you how to know if your car battery needs to be replaced. Keep an eye out for:

  • Dimming headlights
  • Frequent need to rev the engine or perform jump-starts
  • Engine delay when turning the key or pushing the start button
  • Strange power fluctuations

What Causes Car Battery Deterioration?

  • Heat: If you live in a hot area, your battery life will be shorter. Excessive heat will cause the evaporation of liquids in your car battery.
  • Vibrations: If the clamps used to hold down your battery are loose, or you frequently traverse terrain that is tumultuous, your battery’s parts may break down faster.
  • Needing a Jump: If you have accidentally left your lights on overnight, or something similar, that can reduce your battery life. Anytime you need to jump-start your vehicle, that is a good indication that your battery life has diminished.
  • Time: Eventually, every battery will need to be replaced. Car batteries have a finite lifespan and can only endure so many charge cycles.

For a strong idea of how long your car battery should last, review your owner’s manual. You can also get in touch with our service team for personalized guidance on how often to replace your car battery.

How to Test a Car Battery

Before you replace your battery, you may want to learn how to test a car battery to detect issues. You can have your battery tested when you schedule maintenance at our Gaffney, SC-area service center. Many auto stores offer free tests, or you can learn how to test a car battery in your own Kings Mountain garage with these methods:

The Headlight Test:

  1. While keeping the car in park, turn on the engine and the headlights.
  2. Rev the engine and note any changes in the brightness of your headlights.
  3. If your headlights grow brighter as you rev your engine, that means the current is not strong enough to keep your headlights fully illuminated while the car is idling.
  4. At this point, your battery should be further assessed to see if a replacement is warranted.

Using a Digital Multimeter:

  1. Set your voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Find the negative (black) terminal under the hood. Touch the negative meter probe (also black) to it.
  3. Make contact with the positive meter probe (red) to the positive terminal (red)
  4. Ask a friend to turn on the headlights and examine the voltmeter reading.
  5. Have a friend turn on the headlights and check the voltmeter reading.
  6. At 80℉, 12.5 volts or higher means your battery is fully charged. 12.3 volts means it has about 75% remaining charge.11.8 volts or lower indicates 25% or less of charge.
