Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you have determined that there are no issues that need to be addressed, you can reset your check engine light manually. Even a novice can quickly learn how to reset a check engine light following our guide. Don’t be overwhelmed, this process is surprisingly easy! Reset a check engine light in four easy steps:

  1. Turn off your vehicle and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Find the negative terminal. Usually, you will see a black cap and a negative (-) symbol that notes which terminal you are looking for.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal and pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep this to the side for about a minute.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and secure it with your wrench.

While this method often works, it isn’t foolproof. If you still haven’t had luck resetting your check engine light, you can try our next method. Keep in mind that disconnecting your battery may cause your infotainment system to reboot!

Check Your Gas Cap

A simple and often overlooked cause of a stubborn check engine light is the gas cap. If your gas cap is loose or cracked, the subsequent fumes can cause a check engine light to illuminate. Find a safe place to park, remove your gas cap, and secure it back in place. If the check engine light doesn’t turn off right away, try the method listed above.
